Two attorneys reviewing legal documents at a work table

Legal counsel

Legal counsel for companies and individuals

An attorney who reviews before the problem exists, and who responds once it does. We cover the seven areas of law that weigh most on a company's operations and on a family's life in Guatemala.

Areas of specialization

Where we can help

Each area approached according to what is at stake: prevent, negotiate or litigate.

Corporate & Commercial Law

Company formation and registration, amendments to articles of incorporation, supply and distribution agreements, negotiable instruments, and properly documented shareholder meetings.

Criminal Law

Defense from the first statement, alternative measures to detention, private prosecutions and criminal complaints. We explain the charge, what can actually be proven and which outcomes are realistic.

Immigration & Naturalization

Immigration status, residency, Guatemalan nationality and regularization of status, with file tracking and remote handling if you live abroad.

Civil & Family Law

Intestate and testamentary estates, divorce, custody, child support, contracts between private parties and leases.

Tax Law

Compliance before the Guatemalan tax authority (SAT), review of the operation's tax burden, responses to information requests and assessments, and lawful tax planning.

Employment Law

Individual employment contracts and internal work regulations, severance calculations, terminations, and representation before the Labor Inspectorate.

How we handle your matter

Strategy settled before anything is signed

Before we quote fees we need to understand the matter. In the initial consultation we review the facts and the documents, identify any deadlines already running, and tell you whether it is better to negotiate, file or litigate.

The outcome of that meeting is a short document: what we will do, in what order, over what estimated period and at what cost. From there, the decisions are yours.

  • Initial case assessment with review of the available documentation.
  • Identification of legal deadlines that may already be running against you.
  • Action plan with stages, estimated timelines and defined fees.
  • Service for Guatemalans abroad, working from digital documents.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions

What kind of counsel do you offer companies?

We work both sides of the matter. Preventive: company formation and registration, drafting and review of commercial contracts, internal work regulations, shareholder minutes, and compliance before the tax authority and the Commercial Registry. Contentious: representation in commercial, employment and tax disputes. In both cases a named attorney is responsible for the file.

Do you take on individuals or only companies?

Both. A significant part of our work involves personal and family matters: estates and wills, divorce, custody, child support, paternity claims, property sales and leases. The procedure is the same: initial consultation, written plan, and follow-up through to resolution.

How quickly do you reply to an inquiry?

We reply to every inquiry within 24 hours by WhatsApp or email, within our office hours of Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 16:00 Guatemala time (GMT-6). If your matter has a legal deadline approaching, say so in your first message so we can prioritize it.

I live in the United States. Can you handle my matter in Guatemala?

Yes. It is one of our most requested services: Guatemalans living abroad who need to settle an inheritance, grant a power of attorney, register a document, sell real estate or obtain documentation in Guatemala without travelling. We work with digital documents, video consultations and, where the law requires it, the corresponding consular legalization.

How do you charge your fees?

It depends on the matter. Filings with a defined scope — forming a company, an uncontested divorce, a registry filing — are quoted as a fixed amount. Proceedings whose scope cannot be foreseen at the outset are quoted by stages. Either way, you receive the quote in writing before we begin, and there are no charges you have not approved.
